Murky Monday

Rene Knott said it best when he mentioned today we get a "double whammy" with the gloomy weather and it being Monday. While it's been pretty gloomy all day, we DO need the rain so these pesky showers are quite welcome!

Most areas picked up between a quarter and just over half an inch of rain. Friday night and Saturday's rain definitely helped out with the deficit, but we are still more than 2" below average since January 1 thanks to the lack of snow this past winter.

Last week's drought outlook featured moderate drought across almost all of our area, so hopefully these bouts of rain will make a dent in that this week. New outlooks are produced on Tuesdays, and are released to the public on Thursdays, so by then we should have a better idea.

Today wasn't our only chance for rain this week, though. We have another strong low pressure system that is expected to develop to our southwest tomorrow and track to our south by Wednesday morning, and could produce some stronger storms south of St. Louis Wednesday night.

After poring through several models and looking at forecast soundings, or atmospheric profiles, it appears the best environment for severe weather in our area will be our far southern counties and farther south. The atmosphere doesn't seem like it will be as favorable near St. Louis, but all of us have at least a marginal or low risk of severe storms Wednesday night.

Thursday looks unsettled with showers extending into Friday, and of course everyone wants to know what's happening with the forecast this weekend, because the Cardinals are back in town to take on the Cubs for the home opener! Right now the models are split between it being dry and wet Sunday, but I would lean toward some rain at least during the day.

The overall pattern still looks active next week with above average precipitation expected. Rain or shine, expect first pitch temperatures in the low 60s so you'll want long sleeves if you're going to be downtown at Busch or somewhere watching the game.

Regardless, it's an exciting time! Just a few weeks after Opening Day, we will be gearing up for our Weather Bash at Busch Stadium! You can still buy tickets and get more info here.
