In like a lion

March is roaring in like a lion across the bi-state! We ended February with a bout of severe weather that left damage and southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois, and just this past week we had multiple reports of wind damage and a few tornadoes on Monday.

We're coming off the 2nd least snowiest season in St. Louis ever recorded (1.4"), but Mother Nature isn't letting us off the hook just yet. A strong push of cold air from Canada has settled in, and a clipper system embedded in the northwest flow of the jet stream will give us a quick shot of snow on Saturday.

Snow will push in from the northwest early Saturday morning, but will have to overcome a bit of dry air before snow makes it to the ground. Snow showers should begin in the metro area by late morning into the afternoon, and taper off by early evening. Most areas will generally be around 1" total accumulation, with some isolated pockets of 2", especially on grassy surfaces.

Since the roads and ground have been so warm the last several weeks, road conditions won't be a huge concern, but slushy areas will be possible.

Snow will likely be falling during the St. Patrick's Day Parade in downtown St. Louis, so allow yourself a bit more extra time to get to your watching spot, and make sure everyone in the family is bundled up and wearing warm & comfortable shoes.

Unseasonably cold temperatures are expected tonight and Saturday night as lows dip into the 20s. A Freeze Warning is in effect starting tonight and lasting into Sunday. Bring in any potted plants and cover up bulbs/blooms as best as possible to protect them from the sub-freezing temperatures this weekend. The cold will likely kill some unprotected plants, especially fruit trees.

Cooler than average air continues into next week, with our next shot at accumulating snow Sunday night into Monday.

Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday! Remember to set your clocks an hour forward before you go to bed Saturday night. This time of year is always good to remember to check the batteries in your smoke detector, CO detector, and NOAA weather radio while you're already up programming your clocks.

Have a great weekend! Looks like a good one to pull out one of your favorite soup or crock pot recipes!
