Severe weather possible Wednesday afternoon

After a beautiful few days in St. Louis, an active jet stream pattern is setting up across the Plains, increasing our chances for showers and thunderstorms over the next several days.

A deep upper level trough digs south tonight, forcing more energy into our area for Wednesday. A strong area of low pressure will pull a cold front through the bi-state tomorrow afternoon into the evening, bringing intense thunderstorms.

Showers will be possible in the morning, but there should be a bit of a break by midday, with a second line of thunderstorms developing by mid-late afternoon west of St. Louis.

As this line traverses east, it will pack quite a punch through the evening rush hour around the St. Louis metro area. Heavy rain could cause localized flash flooding, and large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes are also possible.

Showers and storms should clear east of St. Louis sometime after 8PM, with storms exiting the viewing area between 10PM and midnight. Below is a timeline of when the morning batch of rain arrives to when the line of severe storms exits the 5 On Your Side viewing area east of I-57.

We'll be here throughout the day and night keeping an eye on it all, and you can track the storms with us on Facebook at "5 On Your Side Weather" as well as our website, ksdk.com/weather.
